Who We Are
We are a professional non-profit association of engineers and scientists working in the environmental field, with a particular focus on issues related to air and waste.
The Association strives to provide a range of multifaceted services to enhance the environmental profession by providing opportunities for its members to network with other professionals in the field, exchange technical information, facilitate interaction among policy makers and the regulated community, facilitate the awareness of academic and applied research as it pertains to the protection of the environment, and to provide consulting companies with an opportunity to raise awareness among the environmental community and the industry about their services and expertise.
This mission is addressed through several means including frequent meetings among local chapters, larger seminars and meetings of interest to the entire region, the publication of newsletters, the publication of this website and the website of the A&WMA National Association, the publication of job listings, the administration of large scholarship programs, and also serves as a link to the National Association.
The National Association has many products including a peer-reviewed scientific research journal (JAWMA) and a monthly magazine designed for environmental managers (EM).
The section also administers the largest scholarship program in the world for doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers through its APERG program, which has given out approximately $50,000 to $125,000 per year in the form of two to five grants to support innovative scientific research in the region. The local chapters also have a robust undergraduate scholarship program that gives several thousand dollars per year to students at schools in the region. There are local student chapters at universities in the region.
Membership in A&WMA’s Sections and Chapters provides environmental professionals with support at the regional and local levels to grow professionally and personally. Each region’s activities and organization varies; however, most Sections and Chapters provide members with networking opportunities, local meetings, training courses, social events, and connections with student chapters.
