WHO ARE WE?
The Mid-Atlantic States Section of the Air and Waste Management Association (MASS-A&WMA) is a professional non-profit association of engineers and scientists working in the environmental field, with a particular focus on issues related to air and waste.  The Association strives to provide an opportunity to enhance the profession by providing opportunities for its members to network with other professionals, exchange technical information, facilitate interaction among policy makers and the regulated community, facilitate the awareness of academic and applied research as it pertains to the protection of the environment, and to provide consulting companies with an opportunity to raise awareness among the environmental community about their services and expertise.

This mission is addressed through several means including frequent meetings among local chapters, larger seminars and meetings of interest to the entire region, the publication of newsletters, the publication of this website, the publication of job listings, the adminstration of large scholarship programs,  and also serves as a link to the national association.

The national association has many products including a peer-reviewed scientific research journal (JAWMA) and a monthly magazine designed for environmental managers.

The section also administers the largest scholarship program in the world for doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers through it's APERG program, which has given out approximately $100,000 to $125,000 per year in the form of four or five grants to support innovative scientific research in the region.  The local chapters also have a robust undergraduate scholarship program that gives several thousand dollars per year to students at schools in the region.  There are several local student chapters at various universities in the region.

WHAT'S NEW
New Career Center
A&WMA's new Career Center (http://careers.awma.org/) is a high priority member benefit as well as a much-needed source of non-program revenue for the Association.  This four-month old program has already attracted almost 300 job seekers to register and post a resume at the online site.  Additionally, the Career Center has seen about 100 job listings during this period.  However, we need the support of members and their employers to continue to make this benefit an outstanding success.  The Career Center can also be used to cover graduate and post-doctorate work and internships provided the opportunities and listings are provided to the Career Center for posting.

Mentoring of Young Professionals
Younger members want mentoring opportunities, and we offer these through networking functions and the two-year old MentorNet program, which is now run by the Young Professionals Committee of the Education Council's Professional Development Division.  We need mentors and need to let our younger members know about this benefit.  Details are available on the web at http://www.awma.org/education/images/MentorInfo.pdf or http://www.mentornet.net.

New Fact Sheets
New fact sheets will be released on Environmental Careers and Air Pollution Control Technologies as well as a revised Ground Level Ozone fact sheet.  Additionally, an Environmental Tips Calendar for home or business will be available for public distribution on the A&WMA web site in early 2007.  All of this information will be available just in time for Earth Day activities.  Be sure to check out these fact sheets and other great A&WMA benefits when the new look of the redesigned web site is unveiled in January 2007.
